Bethany, Okla. - The Southwestern Christian University women's basketball team fell victim to the NAIA Division II's 17th ranked team in the nation on Friday evening at the Pickens-Springer Gymnasium, losing 71-56 to the College of Saint Mary Lady Flames.
Despite trailing Saint Mary (16-5; 3-1 MCAC) from the start, the Lady Eagles kept within striking distance the entire first half of play.
Southwestern Christian managed to take the lead with five minutes remaining in the first half of play off of a trey from senior guard Porchea Sanders. Two minutes later, another three-pointer by Sanders would put the Lady Eagles up 28-23. Back-to-back buckets by the Lady Flames, however, tied the game back at 28 going into the break.
Saint Mary turned the heat up in the second half, shooting 50 percent from the field as the Lady Eagles fell cold with 28 percent shooting. The Lady Flames went five-for-eleven from the three-point line that helped propel them to a 47-31 lead with 14 minutes remaining in the game.
The Lady Eagles fought hard to play catch up, bringing themselves within 10 points of Saint Mary with 12 minutes left.
That was as close as SCU would come, however, as back-to-back treys ignited a shooting-spree by the Lady Flames that extended their lead and solidified a victory over Southwestern Christian.
The Lady Eagles closed the night on 25.6 percent shooting from the field, making three of their twenty three-point attempts. SCU shot 68.8 percent from the charity stripe and out-rebounded the Lady Flames 61-42.
Allie McIntosh and Porchea Sanders tallied 14 points each on the night. McIntosh secured her first double-double of the season by grabbing 10 rebounds while Sanders snagged seven. Ciara Thomas added 10 points to the mix and Kim Hayes grabbed 11 boards for the Lady Eagles.
The Flames shot 40 percent from the field with four of their starters scoring in double digits.
Southwestern Christian will host the York College Lady Panthers (3-16; 0-4 MCAC) on Saturday, January 21st at 3pm.
