BETHANY, Okla. - The Southwestern Christian University men's basketball squad defeated the Central Baptist Mustangs 96-82 on Friday evening at the Pickens-Springer Gymnasium.
Desperately needing a win in conference play, the Eagles dominated the second half of play to collect their second victory in the conference.
In the first half, the Eagles built a slow and steady lead over the Mustangs (6-16; 2-4 MCAC) as Tyler Averill's 11 first-half points grabbed them a 41-35 lead at the half.
Several key defensive plays by the Eagles, accompanied by Marc Traylor's and Glenn Irwin's combined 30 second-half points, helped the Eagles grab an 18 point lead late in the second half.
SCU held on for the 96-82 victory, improving the Eagles to 2-4 in the conference.
The Eagles shot 48.1 percent from the field overall and out-rebounded the Mustangs 49-36.
Irwin led the Eagles with 24 points and eight rebounds while Traylor finished with 21 points. Averill earned another double-double on the year with his 13 points and 10 boards.
Central Baptist shot 41.7 percent from the field and had four players score in double-digits. Gavin McDaniel led the way with 22 points while Blake Hanney added 18 points, Xavier Lindsey added 17, and Spencer Caraway tallied 10.
The Eagles will host the College of the Ozarks (11-9; 3-2 MCAC) on Saturday afternoon at 5pm.
