Southwestern Christian University has announced that they have accepted an invitation to become a member of the Sooner Athletic Conference beginning in the Fall of 2013.
An affiliate of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), the Sooner Athletic Conference was established in 1978-79 with five schools, including current members Oklahoma Baptist University and the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma.
"We are excited to have Southwestern Christian join the Sooner Athletic Conference and what we believe has long been the best group of schools, both athletically and academically, in the NAIA," stated SAC Commissioner John Hudson. "This move is a big step up for Southwestern Christian and is very beneficial to all of the SAC members."
Joining the NAIA as a member institution in the Fall of 2010, SCU has accepted the invitation to the SAC following a three-year stint in the Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference, whose members are spread throughout the Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, and Arkansas region.
"This move to the SAC from the MCAC will shorten travel distances as well as increase the level of competition and visibility for the SCU athletic teams," stated Dr. Ed Huckeby, President of Southwestern Christian University.
"We are excited to be joining the Sooner Athletic Conference," added Mark Arthur, Director of Athletics at Southwestern Christian . "It is one of the elite NAIA conferences and we look forward to competing and developing strong relationships with each member institution. SCU has a strong fan base and I believe this move to the SAC will only enhance our game day experience for our fans."
Other institutions in the SAC include Oklahoma City University, Oklahoma Baptist University, Saint Gregory's University, John Brown University, Mid-America Christian University, University of Sciences and Arts, and Wayland Baptist University. It is anticipated that several other universities will be joining SCU in their decision to join the SAC in 2013.
Southwestern Christian will compete the rest of the 2012-2013 year in the MCAC and will begin competing in the Sooner Athletic Conference in the Fall of 2013.
