When SCU Athletic Director Mark Arthur hired Neil Cagle to lead the Men's Soccer team in 2009, he knew that he was hiring a difference maker. Prior to arriving at SCU, Cagle had proven himself a winner in sixteen seasons as a high school head coach. Consistency was his hallmark, posting a record of 148-37-4 at three different high schools, with six straight seasons in the state quarter-finals or better. He started two programs from scratch at Deer Creek and Bethany and always posted a winning record.
After joining the Eagles, Coach Cagle's 2009 immediately saw success at the collegiate level. His first team went 16-5, winning the NCCAA Regional and the ACCA National Championship. His 2010 squad lost only once, in overtime, during the regular season. They won the NCCAA Regional and finished with an epic record of 20-3. Both his 2009 and 2010 teams qualified and played in the NCCAA National Tournament in Florida.
Cagle missed the first half of the 2011 season while taking care of his wife who was seriously injured in a work accident. Cagle returned to the pitch mid-season to a struggling Eagle's squad. He rallied his troops, taking them all the way to the MCAC Conference Championship match where they lost in the waning seconds. In 2012 SCU qualified once again for the MCAC Conference tournament and finished with a record of 11-7.
Coach Cagle was selected as ACCA National Coach of the Year in 2009. He was voted NCCAA Regional Coach of the Year in 2009 and 2010. He was also voted MCAC Coach of the Year in 2010.
The soccer field, however, is not the only aim for this head coach. "It's always so special when we see one of our players receive his degree. We want our players to compete on the soccer field, but we also want them to compete in life. The success that is most lasting is when our players gain the tools to be successful in life. We want them to honor God and to be men of integrity."
Coach Cagle is married to Cindy, whom he affectionately calls "the former Miss Louisianna". Together, they have three soccer playing sons, Michael, Dustin, and Austin. Brintley, their only granddaughter, can often be found on the sidelines at home matches.
